Throw Art Studio’s Ann Arbor Summer Pottery Camp for older kids introduces students to the fundamentals of wheel throwing in a working ceramic studio. This camp is designed for kids ready to take the next step in pottery by learning how to throw, trim, and finish pieces on the wheel. What Kids Will Experience: Campers receive guided instruction in wheel throwing, learning how to center clay, pull walls, shape forms, and refine pieces through trimming. Instruction focuses on building strong fundamentals, understanding how clay behaves on the wheel, and developing confidence through repetition and practice. During the week, campers will: Learn basic wheel throwing techniques Practice trimming and refining forms Glaze selected pieces for firing Learn the ceramic creation process from clay to finished piece Receive an age-appropriate introduction to pottery chemistry Finished work returns as real ceramic pieces, fired in our kilns at temperatures exceeding 2,000 degrees Fahrenheit. This program is designed to accelerate wheel throwing knowledge and help younger students build a strong foundation at the wheel. Camp Schedule and Details Dates: Four-day camps running from June through August. Sessions last 1 week at a time. Time: Tuesday through Friday, 11:30 AM to 2:00 PM Location: Throw Art Studio in Ann Arbor Pricing and Registration: $399 per child What to Bring: Water bottle Nut-free snack Clothes that can get dirty. Clay won't stain, but glaze can. Safety and Supervision: Campers remain inside the facility at all times. Staff conduct frequent check-ins and closely supervise wheel use, tools, and kiln areas. Safety in the studio is prioritized at all times. Firing and Pickup of Finished Work: Campers will glaze and finish selected work during camp. A maximum of four to five wheel-thrown pieces will be fired and returned. Instructors guide students to create pieces likely to survive the firing process. Breakage can occur during drying or firing and is a normal part of working with clay. Finished work is typically ready for pickup two to three weeks after camp ends. Families will be notified when pieces are ready.
